In an emotional and inspiring twist of fate, High Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs was reminded yesterday of a single act of kindness he had long forgotten, one that would grow into a life-changing movement for hundreds.
Years ago, during a casual meeting at The Autograph, he paid the school fees of a struggling 200-level law student and orphan. That young man, now Cyrus Onu, Esq., has since become the founder of Haven360 Foundation, an organisation dedicated to offering free legal representation to innocent persons unjustly incarcerated.
With nearly 1,000 volunteers across five states, the foundation has already helped over 76 individuals regain their freedom, providing not only legal defence but also rehabilitation and resettlement support. As they near their 100th freedom milestone, Onu has dedicated the achievement to Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, naming him Patron of the foundation.
But for Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, the real victory lies not in the recognition, but in the fact that the recipient of kindness became a benefactor himself. “He took one seed and planted an entire field,” Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs reflected.
Marking International Youth Day, he urged young people to rise, build, innovate, and lead, not just for personal gain, but to multiply their success in the lives of others. His challenge was clear: “Your background does not mean your back must remain on the ground. Nations rise when the right minds are put to work.”
From one forgotten gesture to a movement of mercy, this story proves that the smallest act of giving can ignite a chain reaction that changes the world.
