The Ikwerre Identity and Igbo Denial: Why Our Artists Struggle Outside Home
Many Ikwerre artists and scriptwriters, whether in music or film, fail to gain recognition beyond our territory. One key reason is the denial of our Igbo roots. By rejecting our connection to the broader Igbo nation, we have inadvertently chained the future of our children, limiting their acceptance and opportunities outside Ikwerre land.
When Ikwerre people interact with neighboring tribes, particularly the Ijaw, mistrust often emerges. In their eyes, “anyone who denies their Igbo heritage cannot be trusted.” I can personally attest to this from my experience living among them, regardless of online narratives that downplay these realities.
It’s worse when outsiders—like some Bini and Yoruba groups—encourage Igbo denial. These groups rarely support Ikwerre artists or craftspeople but exploit our resources and dominate employment and industries in Rivers State. In contrast, Duncan Mighty embraced his Igbo identity fully, understanding the challenges it would bring, and that is why he succeeded where many others have struggled.
Historically, our fathers bore Igbo names, spoke Ikwerre dialects, observed Igbo customs like the four market days and age grade system, and practiced Omanneli traditions. Yet, misinformation spread through media and rumor led to division, making some believe Ikwerre heritage was separate from the Igbo nation.
This denial has cost families and individuals deeply—some even harming themselves or denying opportunities—but it cannot continue to dictate our identity or limit our generation.
The youth who aim for success in arts, culture, or industry must reject Igbo denial completely. Ikwerres are unequivocally ancient Igbos, and embracing this truth is essential for recognition and progress. There is no credible evidence linking Ikwerre origin to Bini; claims to the contrary are falsehoods.
It’s time to be proud of our heritage, reclaim our identity, and let our talents and successes speak for themselves. Just as Duncan Mighty did, we must embrace our Igbo roots unapologetically and break the barriers created by past misinformation.
