ECOWAS Declares State of Emergency Across West Africa After Surge in Coups
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a regional state of emergency following a wave of coups and failed mutinies across the sub-region. The announcement was made on December 9, 2025, by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray during the 55th Mediation and Security Council meeting in Abuja.
The declaration comes just days after a foiled coup attempt in Benin, where mutinous soldiers briefly seized a national broadcast station before loyal forces regained control. Touray warned that the growing instability highlights the urgent need to safeguard democracy and strengthen community security across West Africa.
As ECOWAS moves to respond collectively, the state of emergency signals a stronger regional stance against unconstitutional takeovers and rising political tension.
