The New ‘Tax Reform Act’ Is Big Relief For Low- And Middle-Income Earners – Barr. Chioma Nweze

The Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Community Engagement (South East), Chief Barr. Mrs. Chioma Nweze has described the new Tax Reform Act as a major relief for low- and middle-income earners, while also boosting support for small businesses and strengthening Nigeria’s economic foundation.
Barr. Nweze made this known during a Tax Reform Act and Compliance Awareness Programme held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the Dome International Conference Centre, Enugu. The event, themed “Tax Reform Acts and Compliance: Impact on Small and Medium Enterprises in the South East”, brought together key stakeholders, business leaders, and community representatives from across the region.
Speaking at the forum, she explained that the reforms are designed to ease the burden on the poor, support SMEs, attract investors, and ensure a fairer distribution of resources while at the same time improving government revenue and accountability.
She urge students in the South East to take the NELFUND student loan scheme seriously, stressing that it provides an opportunity to pursue education without financial limitations.
Barr. Nweze also highlighted key achievements from her office, including:
Skills Acquisition:Training programmes across the 95 LGAs of the South East.
Empowerment & Grants:Provision of starter packs and financial support for entrepreneurs.
Medical Outreach:Free treatment programs covering cancer care, dialysis, and eye screenings.
Employment Opportunities:Over 1,000 persons employed in various government agencies.
SME Development:Establishment of at least one SME in each of the 95 LGAs in the region.
ICT & POP Training: Capacity-building programmes equipping youths with digital skills.
In her remarks, she emphasized that the South East would no longer engage in “politics of emotion” but would vote en masse for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 in recognition of his commitment to regional development.
The well-attended event featured keynote speaker Barr. Chukwuemeka Eze, Chairman of the Tax Appeal Tribunal (South East Zone) who delivered a paper on the impact of tax reforms on SMEs.
Expert contributions were also made by Mr. Innocent Chinyere Ohagwa, Chartered Accountant and Tax Professional while Mr. Zino Ugboma from NELFUND presented on student loan opportunities.
The programme ended with closing remarks from Mr. Arinze Chime, Zonal Head of FIRS, South East.
Participants, including market women and SME operators, expressed delight at the outcomes of the event, with many receiving tokens of appreciation.
